Caution… Avoid Fraudulent Billing

Physicians who bill public aid should take careful note that the state code prohibits billing other parties if public aid is paying the bill.

According to Illinois Public Aid Code, a physician who obtains payment for the treatment of a patient from the Illinois Department of Public Aid is barred from obtaining any further payments from the patient or any other source.

It is considered a Class B misdemeanor to attempt to obtain the remainder of a bill from anyone else, including insurance companies.
